About

Jessica Hitzman is a conceptual artist based in the high desert of Eastern Oregon. She is expected to complete her Bachelor of Science Degree in Art at Eastern Oregon University this June. Her work is heavily influenced by personal experiences navigating the standards placed on women by society as well as what it means to grow up in the age of the internet and social media. She has worked in the service industry since 2005 which has given her keen insight into human behavior and the patriarchal expectations of women in submissive roles. Her punk rock attitude towards rules and authority got her kicked out of both The University of Oregon and Oregon State University in the early years of her education. Since that time she has come to express those rebellious tendencies through her work by taking inspiration from contemporary conceptual and feminist artists, questioning long-held assumptions about what art should be and how it should be made. She is currently the Student Gallery Director of the Nightingale Gallery as well as the Art Editor for Oregon East Magazine at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande, Oregon.
